Physical Challenge Idea: 30:30:30 Mini “Triathlon”

A few weeks ago I had an idea for another physical challenge to set myself. Last year I decided to prove to myself that I could run for an hour non-stop, and I did it.

I’ve come up with something a little different. I’m calling it the 30:30:30 “triathlon”. It’s not really a proper triathlon as the distances are considerably shorter, but it does involve the same three sports.

A standard triathlon is usually a 1.5km swim, a 40km bike ride then a 10km run. I know that for me to achieve that would require an enormous amount of training and while I’m not ruling it out for the future, that’s not what I’m trying to do.

My variation is a bit different. For a start, it’s non-competitive – I just want to be able to do it. Secondly, I’m aiming to undertake each sport one after the other for 30 minutes, rather than for a set distance or at a particular intensity. Finally, the disciplines will be reversed, purely because it’s more logical that way in the circumstances.

I intend to find a running route to my gym which will take 3o minutes to run, while carrying my swimming gear and a change of clothes. On arrival at the gym, I’ll do 30 minutes on the bike before heading to the pool for another half an hour. By the end I will be knackered so hopefully I can get a lift home again!

It’s a bit much to expect to be able to do all that straight away without trying it out first, so last weekend I decided to try two thirds of it. I worked out a route to run to the gym and headed off with my phone in my bag as a stopwatch. I haven’t run that far for a while and struggled slightly on an uphill section but overall it was fine. When I was nearing the end I realised it wasn’t going to take me half an hour so I took a diversion through the park. The run took about 28 minutes so it should be easy enough to make it up to half an hour. It was only 4.2km (2.6 miles) but I was weighed down by my bag which weighed about 4.5 kilograms.

On arrival at the gym I headed straight for the bikes and cycled for half an hour, which I found pretty easy. I covered just under 17.5 km in the time. Then I walked home. Next time I’ll run there and swim for half an hour, then the time after I’ll probably try all three together. I’m confident I can do it, but I know I’ll be sore the day after!

    I just started triathlon training 3 weeks left of my 1st 9wk training. There will be a 30/30/30 the last week hoping I can finish it. 3 more sessions after that hoping to do a sprint triathlon.
