Neutrinos Faster Than Light?

You may remember a few months ago the scientific community was astonished by news from Italy that an experiment had found neutrinos travelling faster than the speed of light, which, if true, would turn physics as we understand it on its head. I don’t pretend to understand the science, but it would contradict Einstein’s Theory of Relativity which is the basis of much of physics as it is understood today.

However, shortly afterward another experiment by a different laboratory ran a replica experiment which did not have the same findings.

Well, the team behind the initial experiment have responded to criticism of their first effort and changed a few things. They repeated the experiment twenty times and found consistently that the neutrinos arrived faster than light. The findings will be checked by other teams at the same lab will test the results, as will scientists in America and Japan. The speed of the neutrinos was only 0.00000006 seconds faster than light, so I’m not sure what the real significance of this is, but it’s interesting all the same.

About elentari86

Apparently blogs need to cover a certain niche in order to attract readers. My aim is not to attract readers. I don't deny it would be nice not to just be spouting to myself, but the reason I set this blog up was to give myself somewhere to write down my thoughts. If anyone reads them, that's a bonus. This blog will cover a mix of things - anything that comes to mind that I want to write about. I make no promises about how often I will publish new content.
