Official Worldwide Truce For 2012 Olympics

I had no idea the concept of a truce during the Olympics existed in the modern Games, but apparently it does. Through a herculean effort, British diplomats have persuaded every country in the world to agree to a truce during next year’s Games.

The article has some good stories about the difficulties the envoys had getting everyone to sign. South Sudan, the world’s newest nation, and Kiribati don’t have missions at the UN in New York so alternative arrangements had to be made for them to sign and and to get hold of the UN ambassador from the Central African Republic (who knew that was a country?) the envoys had to contact the Belgian ambassador who was travelling with him.

It’s really rather wonderful. Of course, it won’t stop conflict breaking out but it’s a nice symbol.

Apparently blogs need to cover a certain niche in order to attract readers. My aim is not to attract readers. I don't deny it would be nice not to just be spouting to myself, but the reason I set this blog up was to give myself somewhere to write down my thoughts. If anyone reads them, that's a bonus. This blog will cover a mix of things - anything that comes to mind that I want to write about. I make no promises about how often I will publish new content.
